According to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Houston ranks chief among the country's major metropolitan cities in terms of job growth in the retail sector.
Between 2008 and 2011, more than 4,000 retail jobs were added, which has attracted significant numbers of potential workers. Austin ranked second on the list, adding 2,400 jobs during the same time span.
The number of new jobs in Houston's retail sector only represented a 1.5 percent increase, however, the region was one of only a small number experiencing a jump during those three years. After the two Texas cities, only six other towns nationwide recorded positive job growth in the retail sector, including Buffalo, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City, Providence, Springfield and Worcester, Massachusetts.
Other cities in Texas did not experience the same success, as El Paso lost 200 jobs, while San Antonio lost 4,400. Furthermore, Dallas-Forth Worth's retail job sector declined by 9,300 positions.
The increased job population in Houston could improve its real estate sector. With home prices remaining low for Houston properties, more workers could be apt to purchase an estate soon.
